JonesValley > The Class of 51 > Davis, Quinton Quinton Davis
Class of 51

Quinton B. Davis (Class of 51):  went to be with the Lord at the age of 64, on Tuesday, June 17, 1997 in Birmingham at the VA Hospital.  He was surrounded by family.  Immediately after he graduated, he left to serve in the Air Force during the Korean conflict.  Later, he served with the Army National Guard unit out of Graysville for a period of time.  He was self-employed throughout most of his life.  Shortly after leaving the Air Force, he worked for Western Union.  His passion was to have his own gun shop.  So in the early 60’s he began his dream.  It grew steadily during the 60’s, known to many Birmingham police & all who lived in the Powderly area…simply as the “Gun Rack.”  As the times & laws changed concerning guns, he started a new business known to many as the “Mexico Flea Market.”  That later evolved into the “Dixie Black Light & Poster Co.”  He retired and closed his business in 1988-89 timeframe due to health related issues.  He was a hard working & honest man.  He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it…& wouldn’t let you forget it if you did something wrong.  He along with many other parents from the Midfield/Green Acres communities gave selflessly of their time after work at night to help build a football stadium at the ballpark in Midfield.  Many times when someone needed a donation or help with ball team events, he would step-up and asked what was needed …he would handle it.  He loved watching his boys & other kids grow-up playing baseball & football each spring & fall.  Many times he would hear of a family at Christmas & other times, that wouldn’t have food, clothes, or even toys.  He would hand his kids some money & say to us…you know what to do.  We knew & went to do what he wanted us to do.   He was a tough father and sometimes not understood, but it was just his way of trying to raise his kids to be all they could be.  (This is being said from his 3rd daughter who didn’t understand that toughness until she was a parent).  He was preceded in death by his parents, Hollis & Thelma Davis, and one brother, Donald Davis.  He is survived by one sister, Joyce (James) Jacobs.  He left behind a wonderful wife of 43 years, Jeanette Davis.  Together, they raised 6 wonderful children; Debbie (Mike) Lansford, Terri (Dennis) Brice, Melba (Brian) Pierce, Brad (Sandra) Davis, Kathy (Ken) McMahon, and Mitch (Melanie) Davis.  At the time of his passing, he left behind 15 beautiful grandchildren. One more came along a year after his death.  He has numerous great grandkids that he hasn’t had the privilege of meeting yet.  He was a member of “The First Baptist Church of Arkadelphia” in Cullman County.  He was laid to rest in Cullman Memory Gardens.
