  Alta Susan Morris Kizziah
Class of 36

My grandfather had worked as miner in the coal mines of North Jefferson County for years , They lived for the most part in Company camp houses .

My uncle George Washington Morris  was called to military service when the US entered WWI in 1917 and was killed in action in France in November 1918  not long before the armistice was to take place .

My mother, Alma Susan Morris,  was born in January 1918.  Sometime  afterwards the family received an insurance payment  from the government that was to purchase our home place  on Beulah avenue in Powderly .

Mom graduated from Jones Valley in 1936 . She was the first of her family to graduate from high school . She got a job as an operator for the BellSouth System.  She met my Dad in 1939 when he moved from Tuscaloosa County to work for the WPA where he lived with some neighbors.  He found work with US Steel but was called to service in WW II.

Mom was was transferred by BellSouth to Miami, Florida where she married my Dad when he returned from WWII.  She resigned from BellSouth in the 50's to have babies and be a housewife.

Some of my my aunts and uncles were attending Jones Valley when the first fire destroyed the school in the early 20's  . My grandmother  remarked that she went to the school that day to make sure her children were safe .

It  is remarkable that when I attended Jones Valley many of my teachers had also taught my Mom:  Mrs. Smith first grade, Mrs Mcclemore fourth grade, Mrs Little sixth grade,  Octavia Jaxon for math  in the 10 th grade, Thelma Carns and Mr. Driggers were there also.

My Dad passed awau om 1999 and Mom passed in 2001.
